DustScan samples are analysed using the specifically developed computer software to determine two measures of nuisance dust:

  1. Absolute Area Coverage (AAC%): a measure of the density of deposited dust (as presence or absence on the sample slide) irrespective of dust colour; and
  2. Effective Area Coverage (EAC%): the loss of reflectance or 'blackness' of the deposited dust.

DustScan provides 360 directional monitoring, so observation of particulate flux onto, across and out of a site is possible. The results can be related to 5 or 15 arcs around the monitor and can therefore indicate whether dust is coming, for example, from a quarry or other work site or from a nearby ploughed field or construction site. The dust collection slide, mounted on the monitoring head, is orientated with respect to grid or magnetic north to allow repeatable directional reporting of dust in flux.

All Frisbee samples are analysed using Vallacks 2005 method and reported as a deposition rate of undissolved solids in mg/m2/day.
