About DustScan

DustScanAQ is the new trading name for DustScan Ltd; we have recently rebranded to reflect our growing air quality consultancy expertise and involvement in air quality matters. DustScan Ltd was established in 2004 as a spin-off company from Leeds University. The firm is based in Oxfordshire, UK.

DS100-D Dust Flux & Dust Deposition Sampler

DS100-D Dust Flux & Dust Deposition Sampler

The DustScan DS100-D is a combined directional and deposited dust sampler.

The unit combines the DS100 sticky pad directional dust gauge with the DustDisc dust settlement gauge by replacing the standard DS100 rain gauge with a DustDisc holder and bird-strike guard.

The directional and deposited dust sampler collects dust in horizontal flux from 360° around the sampling head as well dust depositing out of the air. The DustScan DS100-D can be used for monitoring on site boundaries or at receptors. The collected dust is measured using DustScan’s unique software to determine dust coverage (AAC) and dust soiling (EAC); these measurements are expressed as percentages and are noted in IAQM guidance. Subsequent analysis can be used on the DustDisc to determine the mass of material and calculate the dust deposition rate. If required, deposited or fugitive dust may be further investigated using microscopic or other analytical methods.

Sampling periods should be regular and uniform in order to deduce useful information.

Applications

The DustScan DS100-D is easy to install and operate. It can be used to collect comprehensive dust monitoring data from a range of sites and environmental conditions. The combined unit allows for simultaneous collection of both dust flux and deposition data. The sampler is widely used on a variety of sites including quarries, construction and demolition sites, landfill, waste transfer and recycling units and power stations.

The DustScan DS100-D is ideal for:

  • Baseline monitoring for both directional and depositional dust levels
  • Routine site boundary or fence-line monitoring
  • Investigating allegations of dust nuisance at potential receptors
  • Compliance monitoring
  • Assessing the effectiveness of dust suppression measures
  • Locating fugitive dust pathways and sources

Sampling

DustScan DS100-D directional and deposited dust samplers are supplied with 2 directional sampling cylinders and 2 DustDisc cases to allow for continuous dust flux and deposition sampling. The directional and DustDisc samplers are typically changed on a weekly or fortnightly basis depending on client reporting requirements and site operations.

The directional cylinders and DustDiscs are pre-fitted with dust collection slides (sticky pads) to allow for immediate sampling. The sampling cylinder is fitted onto the monitoring head by locating its notch over the alignment peg. The cylinder is held in place by the screw-on DustDisc holder and there is a recess in this holder where the DustDisc cases are slid into position.

The directional cylinders fit into transport flasks and there is a cover provided for the DustDiscs. These are used to prevent sample contamination. The samplers are returned to DustScan for analysis in purpose-built transport boxes which are also supplied.

Reporting

The dust collected on the directional sticky pads are analysed by DustScan’s unique computer software to determine the absolute area coverage (%AAC) and the effective area coverage (%EAC). For directional dust samplers the results are reported for individual 15° segments. The %AAC and %EAC results for both directional and dust settlement are combined to produce dust annoyance risk values which can be used as Key Performance Indicator (values) when assessing site performance.

For more information about DustScan directional dust monitoring reports, please see the DustScan Analysis page.

DustDisc samples are suitable for release gravimetric analysis since dust may be removed from sticky pads even after sealing. Gravimetric (mg/m2/day) data as well as scanned data (AAC% and EAC%) may be obtained. For more information about gravimetric analysis and results, please see the DustScan Gravimetric Analysis page.
