Indoor Air Quality Testing
At DustScanAQ, we specialise in indoor air quality testing and assessments across industrial, commercial, educational, and public premises.
We typically monitor the concentrations of airborne pollutants such as fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), and volatile organic compounds (VOC) using a range of indoor air quality monitoring equipment and UKAS-accredited partner laboratories. Results are compared with recognised indoor air quality guidelines, including those published by the WHO, as well as ventilation performance standards such as Building Regulations Part F and recommendations from CIBSE.
Indoor Air Quality Monitoring
Indoor air quality affects the health, comfort, and wellbeing of building occupants and visitors. Poor air quality indoors has been linked to Sick Building Syndrome and other health concerns, as well as reduced productivity and impaired learning in schools. Since we spend most of our time indoors, pollutant sources are often overlooked.
Some pollutants originate outdoors, for example traffic emissions including particulates, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and carbon monoxide (CO). However, many are generated indoors through cooking, solid fuel burning, new furnishings or decoration, cleaning products, air fresheners, people, and pets.
We regularly carry out indoor air quality testing and assessment to investigate the following:
- Ventilation effectiveness and performance in schools and offices, typically by monitoring CO2 levels during occupied periods
- Post-construction or pre-occupation VOC testing (including formaldehyde), for example for BREEAM compliance
- General school building indoor air quality with reference to BB101
- General office air quality, particularly where there are concerns about occupant health or pollution ingress
- Damp and mould concerns by monitoring bioaerosols
- Ground gas levels, including radon (Rn), methane (CH4), and CO2
Complete Service
We provide a complete range of indoor air quality testing and monitoring services. Our team set up and supervise all sampling equipment and take a professional, impartial approach. During monitoring, we review the building’s ventilation arrangements and occupant activities, and record potential pollutant sources. This context allows us to deliver clear, building-specific recommendations in our reports.
We work discreetly to minimise disruption to occupants, which is especially important in schools. In most cases, sampling needs to be carried out during occupied periods. As some equipment produces noise, we plan suitable methods and timings in advance to match both the application and the environment. While most surveys can be undertaken during typical working hours, some investigations require longer-term continuous indoor air quality monitoring.
Our indoor air quality consultants hold memberships with professional bodies such as the Institute of Air Quality Management (IAQM) and the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS). They also bring extensive experience, having completed more than 400 monitoring surveys across a wide variety of workplaces and educational settings.
